Australia’s Pat Cummins was expected to be the gun bowler for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the fast bowling department going into the 2020 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). It was pretty much known that among the specialist pacers, Cummins would be their first-choice speedster ahead of New Zealand’s Lockie Ferguson and USA’s Ali Khan.
It didn’t spring a surprise that he was picked for KKR’s opening match in the tournament against the Mumbai Indians (MI) at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi. In the auction, which took place on December 2019, KKR shelled out a stunning INR 15.5 crores on Cummins. However, in the first game, he went through a bit of a rough patch, being taken for runs.
A rough day for Pat Cummins
He started with a wide after which Rohit Sharma, MI’s captain, smashed him for a humongous six over the deep mid-wicket region. Then in the fifth ball of the same over, Rohit collected another maximum off the seamer, yet again through deep mid-wicket. In his first over on his return for KKR, Cummins conceded as many as 15 runs and looked out of sorts.
In his second over, it was Saurabh Tiwary, who laid into Cummins. To start with, the left-hander spanked a boundary and followed it up with a gorgeous six down the ground. However, Cummins was able to make a bit of comeback, giving only singles and doubles. In the third over, things didn’t get any better for him as Rohit slapped him for two fours and a six.
In his third over, Cummins leaked 14 runs and things only went downhill for the bowler, who was expected to make regular breakthroughs. Such was the case that he didn’t even complete his quota of four overs. In three overs, he gave away 49 runs. The only positive for him was that he took a sharp catch to dismiss Tiwary, giving Sunil Narine his first wicket.
In the meantime, the KKR fans aren’t satisfied with Cummins by any stretch of the imagination. The fans watched in dismay even as the pacer conceded runs at an alarming rate.
