Team India surprised their fans in the inconsequential game against Afghanistan as they decided to rest their fringe players. The likes of Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan, Jasprit Bumrah, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Yuzvendra Chahal were rested with an aim to give the benched players a chance. Everyone was left shocked to see MS Dhoni walking out for the toss and were soon delighted as well. This match was his 200th ODI as the captain of India. But his form with the bat continued and Dhoni could only score eight runs.

Chasing a middling total of 253 runs, the new opening pair of KL Rahul and Ambati Rayudu gave India a blistering start. They attacked the medium pacers of Afghanistan and kept the scoreboard ticking. Gulbadin Naib was at the receiving end. At one stage, it felt like both will take the game away from them. But they were nipped out by their best bowlers, Mohammad Nabi and Rashid Khan.

At 127/2, MS Dhoni came out to bat and there was a huge roar in the Stadium with the fans anticipating a big knock from him as there was no pressure.

Umpire’s howler cut shorts Dhoni’s knock

With two new batsmen in the middle, Asghar sensed an opportunity to slip in a few quick overs and introduced the part-timers, Javed Ahmadi and Rahmat Shah, into the attack. Amazingly, both of them bowled a few cheap overs and tried to increase the required rate. However, in the 26th over, Ahmadi’s fuller length delivery turned a long way after pitching only to hit MS Dhoni’s pads.

The fielding side appealed vociferously and the umpire obliged raising his finger to leave the crowd silenced. India didn’t even have a review as the ball-tracking showed that it was missing the leg-stump by a long way. Nevertheless, it was a wicket for Afghanistan and yet another failure for the veteran batsman.

He could only score eight runs off 17 deliveries to leave Twitter disappointed once again after a duck which he bagged against Hong Kong.
