England’s domestic T20 tournament has helped fans witness a rare scene on Friday. England’s Test skipper Joe Root and New Zealand’s skipper Kane Williamson played together in the same team. Williamson recently struck a deal with the Yorkshire Cricket Club to represent them in the T20 Blast. Meanwhile, Yorkshire is Joe Root’s county team.
Hence, when these two batted together in the North group encounter against Lancashire, it was a delight for the fans. Both of these batsmen are considered to be among the ‘Fab-4’ in world cricket. Also, it is a rarity that we see such top class players play for the same team. However, to their utter disappointment, their team ended up losing the game by just one run.
A county player leads the team consisting of these stalwarts
Yorkshire’s skipper Steven Patterson won the toss and opted to field first in a game that was shortened due to rain. The game was reduced to 14 overs per side. Batting first, Lancashire put up a huge total of 176 runs for the loss of two wickets. Liam Livingstone, who has been in wonderful form this season continued to impress everyone. He scored 79 off just 37 balls to give his team the ideal start.
Furthermore, with the help of cameos from Arronn Lilley and Jordan Clark, they got to the massive total. In the chase, Adam Lyth provided Yorkshire with the start they wanted. He scored 60 off just 26 balls. However, the team lost its way in between. But, Joe Root came to the rescue and scored a brilliant half-century, although it went in vain. His team needed 17 runs to win in the last over and the English batter could only score 13 runs off the first five balls.
Williamson, who came into the middle in the 19th over, hit a boundary off his first ball and needed to do that again in the last ball of the innings. However, he failed to do so and managed to score only 2 runs. Yorkshire, tantalisingly, fell short of the target by just 1 run. Nevertheless, Twitterati was delighted to watch this duo bat and shared their happiness on Twitter.
Here is how Twitterati reacted:
Wonder if any non-international player has ever captained a county side before that includes two current Test captains? Steve Patterson leading Yorkshire tonight, of course, in a side featuring Joe Root and Kane Williamson.

Why did Joe root and Kane Williamson bat only 24 balls between themselves when both remained not out. Root showed he’s just as good a t20 player as Williamson #t20blast. pic.twitter.com/dQxwF1v18d

Has there ever been a better final over T20 Blast scenario than tonight in the Roses match?!
17 needed of the last over and Yorkshire had Joe Root and Kane Williamson at the crease….
Dreamy…

I don’t understand that. Sending Plunkett and Bresnan in ahead of one of the worlds best in Kane Williamson. I know they are “hitters” but I think Yorks win that game with Williamson in earlier. #LANvYOR #T20Blast

Yorkshire sent Tim Bresnan in before Kane Williamson….🤷♂️ #LANvYOR #T20Blast

you know the format is shite when Bresnan and Plunkett are sent out to bat before Kane Williamson.

Imagine batting kane Williamson behind Willey, plunkett and Bresnan. 6 fingered dingle muppets 😂

Plunkett in at 4. It seems Yorkshire didn't watch Kane Williamson bat in the IPL#VitalityBlast
