Suresh Raina is known as Mr IPL for some reason. His record while batting at number three in the tournament is impeccable. Moreover, the southpaw tends to bring out his best in the IPL. But the recently concluded season was completely different. Raina could only muster 383 runs in 17 outings at an underwhelming strike-rate of 121.97. More than anything, he was expected to do something special in the final to prove his mettle.
But what followed was another abject performance from one of the most experienced IPL player. In the field, Raina dropped Hardik Pandya when he was batting on 4 in the 18th over of the innings and the swashbuckler added 12 more runs to his kitty before getting out in the very next over. But still many thought CSK will chase down the 150-run target with their strong and experienced batting line-up.
Struggling stay and a needless review
Faf du Plessis gave his team a brilliant start by scoring 26 runs off just 13 deliveries and it was just about carrying the momentum forward. Suresh Raina came out to bat at three and looked completely out of touch during his 14-ball stay. His struggles against the short ball are known to everyone and Mumbai clearly exploited it. After surviving the barrage of bouncers, he was trapped in front of the stumps by the leggie Rahul Chahar.
To the naked eye, it looked plumb and it was really a glaring decision from him to go for the review. The hawk-eye then confirmed that the ball would’ve hit the top of the middle-stump. It was an end of a hot and cold season for Suresh Raina and his performance in the final must’ve definitely cost CSK the title.
What if he had held on to Pandya’s catch? What if he had scored a bit quick in those 14 deliveries? Well, small margins come into play when you lose a game by just 1 runs and Raina made some big mistakes on the night of the final.
Here’s how Twitter reacted to his poor show:
#csk needs to start looking for a new No.3 next season. Looks like Raina is reaching the end of the road.

What I got as a Suresh Raina fan yesterday? dropped catches, uncomfortable batting, worst average, unwanted loss of DRS..
None of the match this season he won for CSK. And in finals this performance.
