The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) shocked everyone late on Friday by announcing a plethora of squads for Team India’s upcoming series. The selectors picked the squads for the Windies and Australia T20Is and for the four-match Test series down under as well. However, the most shocking news was MS Dhoni’s absence from the shortest format which has left his fans fuming.
Not many days are left in Dhoni’s career now and it is evident that his hitting capabilities are waning fast. His place in the ODI squad is already being questioned and with Rishabh Pant performing well, the critics are backing the youngster to do well in the near future. Having said that, Dhoni has got immense backing from the captain Virat Kohli and head coach Ravi Shastri.
Adds experience to the team
MS Dhoni adds immense value to the team only with his presence behind the wickets and it is very well known fact that the veteran takes over the captaincy whenever the things go down the wire. His presence in the team is extremely important for a young Indian side and one would’ve expected him to be with the group during the T20Is against Windies and Australia.
But while speaking to the media, MSK Prasad has clarified that MS Dhoni hasn’t been dropped and his T20I career isn’t over. The chief selector also added that they wanted to try the second wicket-keeper batsman for the future and hence took the step.
But the fans are clearly not happy with the selector’s decision as the 37-year-old doesn’t need the rest with him not playing the longest format of the game. It will be interesting to see the way the Men in Blue fare in his absence and all the eyes will be on Rishabh Pant who is tipped as Dhoni’s successor behind the wickets now.
Here’s how Twitter reacted to Dhoni’s absence:
The big news is obviously the absence of MS Dhoni from the T20 squad. The next World T20 isn't till 2020 so this is an acknowledgement that someone else will be behind the stumps there.

Amid the Dhoni decision, it's great to see another Jharkhand player finally getting his due. Shahbaz Nadeem has been knocking on the doors for a few years now.

Even the Indian T20i team for #AusvInd announced. 17 members. Big NEWS is that Dhoni is NOT in that team too. Might not see Dhoni in India colours for the T20 format again… #AusvInd

It isn't such a bad thing. Dhoni's favourite genre had always been the ODI and he will continue there till 2019 post which I expect him to take a call on his future. I am pretty certain he would have been part of this decision

No Dhoni in T20s means WC 2019 is the last world cup for the legend. The call is loud and clear. Hope he wins it and celebrates at the Lords balcony.

My only concern with Dhoni is that he isn't getting, or maybe isn't too keen to get, game time between ODI matches. But he will have the Australia/NZ and home ODIs + the IPL before the World Cup.

Thank you Dhoni ❤

So no Dhoni in the #T20I team for the 3 matches vs Windies. Oh no… Who will they all blame now if there is a power cut in their home ? 🤔🤔 #INDvWI.
On a serious note, good to see Rishabh Pant take it over. Would love to see him in full flow. #Dhoni

Selectors waited for this long thinking that dhoni will retire on his own, now that doesn't seems possible they dropped him, BOOM hopefully another rut run in the coming odi's and then INSHALLAH#Dhoni #TeamIndia #WIvIND #INDvAUS

True!!! This is not a way to exclude legend of cricket from the team. #Dhoni https://t.co/E2KZyFb4jJ

Dhoni should go ahead and retire from all the formats . This will be the slap on the face of selectors and BCCI. If you cannot respect a legend. Legend will respond accordingly
