Indian all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja might have won the Man of the Match for his performance in the Colombo Test but it didn’t bring all good news for the 28-year-old. Jadeja has been suspended from the last match of the series at Pallakele that starts on Saturday (August 12). He already had three demerit points in his account and accumulated another three in the second Test.

The incident that led to his suspension occurred on the third day of the game. Jadeja while bowling the 58th over of Sri Lanka’s second innings had the batsman Dimuth Karunaratne hit the ball back to him. In his response, the left-arm spinner threw the ball back at the batsman while he hadn’t even stepped out of the crease.

It closely missed the batsman and thus the on-field umpires Bruce Oxenford and Rod Tucker deemed it to be “in a dangerous manner” and reported the incident. As per ICC Press Release that made Jadeja eligible for action for breaching article 2.2.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Player and Player Support Personnel, which relates to “throwing a ball (or any other item of cricket equipment such as a water bottle) at or near a Player, Player Support Personnel, Umpire, Match Referee or any other third person in an inappropriate and/or dangerous manner during an International Match”.

As a penalty for the same, Jadeja was fined 50 per cent of his match fees and handed over three demerit points. This coupled with the three that he had picked up in the Indore Test against New Zealand back in October 2016 added up to six in the last 24 months. Which made him eligible for a one-match suspension.

Richie Richardson the Match Referees for the game sanctioned the punishment and Jadeja accepted it and thus a formal hearing was called for.
