AB de Villiers, the former South African cricketer, congratulated Mumbai Indians (MI) for winning the 2020 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). In the final on Tuesday, November 10, at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, MI, captained by Rohit Sharma, beat the Delhi Capitals (DC) by five wickets with eight balls to spare. It was also their fifth IPL trophy in the last eight seasons.

After losing the toss and being put in to field first, MI restricted the opponents to 156 for seven in 20 overs. Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant scored fifties and starred for the Capitals, though their efforts couldn’t take their team to a daunting total. In the run-chase, MI didn’t have many troubles by any means. Sharma was on top of his game, scoring 68 runs off 51 balls with five fours and four sixes.

Ishan Kishan’s unbeaten 19-ball 33 made sure that the game didn’t go down to the wire. De Villiers, who played for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), lauded the Mumbai-based franchise and even went on to call them the best team of 2020. The legendary Protea took to Twitter and wrote, “Well done @mipaltan! Without a doubt the best team this year.”

AB de Villiers yet to win an IPL trophy

In the meantime, after seeing his tweet, the fans asked him to switch his IPL team. ABD has been a part of the RCB since 2011 but hasn’t gotten his hands on the trophy. The Pretoria-born is one of the most successful foreign players in the IPL and is the second-highest run-scorer for the Challengers after their skipper Virat Kohli.

In the previous edition, De Villiers was the most fluent batsman for RCB without a shred of a doubt. In 14 innings, the veteran scored 454 runs at an average and strike-rate of 45.40 and 158.74 respectively. He also racked up five half-centuries to show his class and calibre with the bat in hand.

Fans reckon that by staying in RCB, it’s near-impossible for ABD to win a trophy. Hence, his supporters want him to represent some other teams going forward.
