A lot of fans would’ve expected Mithali Raj & Co. to put up a spirited performance in the Women’s World Cup 2017 given the form they were in leading into the tournament. With a win over the White Ferns they made it to the last four and in style. At the County Ground in Derby, Suzie Bates decided to bowl first after winning the toss. India lost their opening pair within 21 runs. Smriti Mandhana continued her slump and was out for just 13 runs.
Cometh the hour, cometh the skipper! The lady who has scored the maximum runs in the history of women’s ODI cricket, Mithali Raj was up to the mark when the team needed him the most. With Harmanpreet Kaur at the other end, the duo cemented a massive partnership. Raj scored 109 runs from 123 deliveries while Kaur completed her half-century. The stage was set for Veda Krishnamurthy to finish off the innings and she did it in style, by scoring 70 runs from just 45 deliveries.
India managed to score 265 runs from their 50 overs. With 266 to win, the neutral fans thought that they were in for a cracker. But that was not to be as the Indian bowling was too hot to handle for the Ferns. It was a tame response from New Zealand as they were bundled for just 79 runs. Rajeshwari Gayakwad was the best bowler for India as he completed her five-wicket haul conceding just 15 runs.
India will now face the Australian test in the semis. Twitterati lauded the brilliant performance of the ladies. Famous sportspersons like Sachin Tendulkar, Babita Phogat and Virender Sehwag congratulated the team on social media. The players engaged themselves in selfies and hugs after the match. No matter what the outcome will be in the match against the mighty Aussies on Thursday, the ladies have made the nation proud with their scintillating performances.
