Back in March, before the start of the 2019 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), Gautam Gambhir, the former Indian cricketer, criticised Virat Kohli, who was the captain of the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). The 37-year-old mentioned that Virat is neither tactful nor shrewd as a captain.  Gambhir said that Kohli hasn’t won the IPL and a captain is only as good as his record.

Gambhir felt that Kohli was lucky to get a long run as the RCB skipper and he should thank the franchise for sticking to him for that long. Recently, the Delhi-born cricketer has again been a bit critical of Virat, this time during the ongoing 2019 World Cup in England and Wales. Gambhir put forth the fact his IPL franchise has finished at the bottom of the table on most instances.

Gambhir questions Kohli’s credentials as skipper

Gambhir admitted that Virat is a good skipper for the national team, but that’s because MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma are there alongside him. Both Rohit and Dhoni have done exceptionally as skipper, both in IPL and at the international level. Dhoni has all the ICC trophies under his belt along with three IPL titles. Rohit, on the other hand, has four IPL championships and also won a few series’ for India.

“Virat Kohli is a good captain for India only because he has MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma behind him. If you are talking about Kohli the captain, he would have won RCB an IPL title since he has taken over the captaincy there. Most of the times his team RCB has finished on number 8,” Gambhir, who played his last competitive game last year, was quoted as saying in an interview with TV9.

As far as numbers are concerned, Virat has done well in the World Cup. India finished on top of the points table after the league stage with 15 points from nine matches. Apart from the loss at the hands of England, the Men in Blue have done reasonably. In the meantime, the fans are unhappy with Gambhir and they lashed out at the retired batsman for his stern words about Kohli.
