In the South Africa vs India, 3rd ODI Aiden Markram won the toss and asked India to bat first. The visiting team won the first two ODIs while chasing and thus the young Proteas skipper wanted to put them in and see how they faired batting early on in the game. Indian opener Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan walked out to take the crease. But Sharma couldn’t even survive the first over.

On the third ball from Kagiso Rabada, he misread the bounce in the ball and almost hit it to the point fielder. But despite surviving there Sharma couldn’t capitalize and bottom edged the last ball of the over to give Rabada and South Africa an early success. He looked tentative and wasn’t sure whether to play or let it go.

It was the length of the ball and the extra bounce that Rabada managed to extract which got the better of Rohit who was caught on the crease. He wasn’t sure whether to go forward to play that one or rock back. In the end, he decided to withdraw his bat but it was a bit too late and the ball carried an edge to Heinrich Klaasen who gleefully accepted his first international catch.

Rohit hasn’t had a fruitful time on the South African tour this far. He played the first two Tests and returned with 11, 10, 10 and 47 runs in the four innings. It was expected that the right-hander would get back his mojo in the limited-overs series. But if the first three ODIs are any indication, he clearly looks out of form.

He was dismissed for 20 in the first ODI in Durban, could only manage 15 in Centurion where the 30-year-old was the only Indian batsman to get out as the team won the match by 9 wickets. At the Newlands he couldn’t  even open his account and was dismissed for a duck.

Twitterati wasn’t quite impressed and rather asked Rohit to call it a day on his overseas career:
