Australia set a target of 287 for India to win the Test and take a 2-0 lead in the series. Considering the behaviour of the pitch, it was never going to be an easy chase. India needed a good start from the opening duo of KL Rahul and Murali Vijay if they wanted to chase 287 on this pitch.
Rahul got out in the very first over as India’s hopes suffered a huge dent. The Indian opener has struggled for form throughout 2018, especially away from home in Tests. The right-handed batsman has got more than enough chances to prove himself. But he has failed to justify his inclusion on most occasions in the whites.
He has only managed to score 377 runs in 18 innings away from home in 2018. The 26-year-old struggled throughout the five-match series in England and he kept getting out for low scores. He failed to score even a single 50+ score in the first nine innings of the series. A brilliant century in the second innings of the final Test at The Oval helped him in keep his position in the squad for this series.
KL Rahul’s horrible run continues
There were huge expectations from the opener coming into this series, but it has proved to be another disappointment until now. He has scored only 48 runs in four innings of the first two Tests of the series at an average of 12. Virat Kohli and team management have given him enough backing and a longer rope but with little returns.
His partner Murali Vijay performed reasonably well in the second innings today. The Tamil Nadu batsman looked solid at the crease and though not at his best he played 67 balls for his 20.
At the end of Day 4, Team India is in a very poor position as the visitors need 175 more runs to win with just five wickets in the hand. If they lose the Test tomorrow, the team management might want to take some tough calls for the third Test. It is yet to be seen if the management has lost faith in KL Rahul or not but fans on Twitter have surely lost faith in him.

Absolutely criminal to keep KL Rahul in the playing 11. Not only he failed himself but also the country in numerous occasions. If we loose Ravi Shastri and Virat Kohli should be held responsible #INDvAUS

I beg please just don't give chances to people like KL Rahul just on the basis of IPL. There are so many good players sitting outside. Enough chances given to this guy. Let him play domestic cricket properly first.@BCCI #AUSvsIND
