Wisden Cricket recently conducted a poll to decide who was the greatest cricketer of the 20th century. There were some big names in the list the likes of Sir Donald Bradman, Shane Warne, Sir Jack Hobbs, Sir Vivian Richards and Sir Garfield Sobers. As one would expect, Sir Don won the highest votes and not many would disagree with that.
Warne, who got the fourth highest votes among all these cricketers, was quick to acknowledge a fact Sir Don was not just the finest cricketer, but also the greatest sportsman of all time. He pointed out how his immortal statistics are incomparable to anyone in any sporting fraternity.
“And rightly so – the Don was the greatest sportsman that’s ever lived on the planet. Compare anyone from any sport, from any era with any calculations you want – he was the best. What an amazing honour it was to be voted with this amazing group of Sirs!” Warne said.
Here is Warney’s tweet

Fans take a dig at Warne for his assessment
Well, the never-ending greatest of all time debate brings so many perspectives and unique opinions to the table, but one can never accurately determine who exactly is the GOAT. It is difficult to rank one person at the helm in cricket but the 49-year-old went all the way and conceded Bradman as the greatest sportsman, not just the greatest cricket.
As many would expect, this didn’t go well with the fans. Whilst the Indian cricket fans batted for Sachin Tendulkar‘s godliness, some other fans pointed out how inappropriate it is to compare gentlemen from different sports. Various other legendary names like Pele, Diego Maradona, Serena Williams, Roger Federer, Usain Bolt, Michael Phelps among others come into the fray when it comes to this debate.
Such statements often ask for trouble and Twitterati was on fire to show Warney that he was wrong with his assessment. Although not many can disregard that Sir Don’s statistics are flabbergasting, he played most of his games against England and not many competitive bowlers.
Here’s what the fans had to say in response to Warne’s opinion:
Muhammad Ali …..🤷♂️

Michael Phelps in Swimming. Arguably the greatest & most dominant athlete?
23 Gold, 3 Silver, 2 Bronze, Ratings 146
The second best swimmer (Mark Splitz) got a ratings of just 56. Just shows how dominant MP was in Swimming.

I can never understand why @jacqueskallis75 is not on all of these lists. Averages more with the bat in tests than Sachin, Lara, Dravid, Kohli, Ponting etc. and also has 292 test wickets @ 32. Add to that 200 catches also but he still seems to get forgotten in the list of greats!

I agree,Squash as a sports is still searching for its real recognition. This game is played all over the world and to me its one of the most tolling sport where you are required to be Super fit. @Jksq63Khan was called Super Fit Jehangir Khan due to his E.Ordinary fitness.

He never scored in subcontinent pitches how he is greatest batsman 🤔🤔

You think uncovered pitches would be easy to bat on? Not to mention his average of 99.94 was over a period of twenty years. Peerless.

Played just 50 tests in 20 years against villagers with no workload and media pressure as well as technology

Respect for Don but ever heard of Jehangir Khan? A player who won continuous 555 matches over a period of more than 05 years all around the world in #Squash

Though I can't question Don, Sobers and Richards, rest are questionable. Warne was ineffective in subcontinent pitches if you look at his records, especially India. So his inclusion is an offence to Sachin and Lara, who were undoubtedly better match winners and destructive
