In a span of 14 hours, two of the favorites were jawed down in emphatic fashion. West Indies were roasted in the 1st Test match by the English side, but they came back to beat the hosts by 5 wickets. It was their first win in 17 years against England in England. The visitors showed a lot of character and derailed a confident English side, apart from making the cricket pundits eat the bullet.

Something similar happened in Mirpur, where a strong Australian side failed to chase 265 after being comfortably placed; with a hundred from opener David Warner and a 134-run stand with skipper Steve Smith. All-rounder Shakib Al Hasan jolted the visitors with his second 5-wicket haul of the match and with assistance from the other spinners, Bangladesh registered their first victory in Test cricket against Australia.

Root talks about taking risks

After the game, the England captain Joe Root said: “Last night, we were in a position where we could win the game, it was a fifth-day wicket and maybe we slightly misread the surface. Looking at two guys who’ve taken nearly 900 Test wickets between them, and the other bowlers we have available, on a fifth-day pitch, I thought we had a great opportunity to win the game,” he said of Broad and Anderson. Root added that although there is need to take a risk in Test cricket, they would try their best to put up better performances in the upcoming matches. “You’ve got to take your chances in Test cricket. When you get to this level, if you give guys chances, they generally go on and hurt you. It’s been a strange Test match, there have been so many catches go down. It’s not always the easiest viewing ground. But we have to be better,” he added.

The Twitterati never spares anyone and they happily trolled the Ashes competitors. With both Australia and England losing to Bangladesh and West Indies respectively, a lot of pot-shots and jokes were fired at the two sides.
