The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced that The Indian Premier League (IPL) will be having 10 teams from 2022 onwards. The decision was zeroed in on during the Annual General Meeting on Wednesday, December 24.
However, the upcoming edition of the T20 tournament will feature eight teams, which should be relieving for the franchises. There’s not much time left for the IPL 2021 after the 2020 edition ended on November 10 with Mumbai Indians crowned as the champions for the fifth time in eight years.
IPL franchises against the mega auction
A number of franchises were also against a mega auction as they had already suffered losses due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which has been wreaking havoc over the last 10 months or so.
In another development, the BCCI also echoed ICC’s decision to include cricket in the T20 format for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics “after getting some clarifications from the International Olympic Committee”.
“Look, the BCCI is an autonomous body and it would like to maintain its autonomy. Our legal team is looking to get a few clarifications. Obviously, cricket in the Olympics is great for the game. Let’s hope we can move in the right direction,” a member, who was a part of the AGM was quoted as saying.
The world’s richest cricket board has also decided that if the Indian government doesn’t provide it with full tax exemption to host the T20 World Cup in 2021, it would agree to deduction of USD 390 million from the global body.
“We have told the ICC that we will approach our government for tax rebate but if we don’t get that exemption, the amount, which is around USD 123 million, will be deducted from our annual revenue, so we will get around USD 267 million. But India is hosting the 2021 T20 World Cup,” a source mentioned.
In the meantime, Twitterati had their bit of fun after the BCCI put forth their decision of a 10-team IPL from 2022. Back in 2011, the IPL had 10 teams when Pune Warriors and Kochi Tuskers Kerala were part of the tournament. The netizens on Twitter posted a number of memes on BCCI’s decision.
