After a crushing defeat at the hands of the visiting Sri Lankan side at Dharamsala, team India wishes to leave no stone unturned in the Mohali ODI. The second ODI will be a do or die encounter for the hosts as the series would be at stake for them. Amidst this backdrop, young Tamil Nadu all-rounder, Washington Sundar, has been rewarded with his international cap. Ravi Shastri presented him the cap.
Sundar has been in a prolific form in the recent times in the domestic circuit. His rise to the top at the bare age of 18 has been phenomenal. Sundar made his first impact at the big stage whilst being a part of the India U19 team. But his claim to fame arrived earlier this year when he turned up for the Rising Pune Supergiant in the IPL.
Albeit he is a quality batsman, the RPS camp fielded him as their lead spinner. He responded well by bowling highly economical spells throughout the tournament, including the big finals against the Mumbai Indians. The fans and the pundits knew straightaway that this young lad has some serious talent.
Soon, he was seen in the Duleep Trophy and he responded well by performing exceptionally well with both bat and the ball for his side en route their championship win. Playing for Tamil Nadu in the Ranji Trophy, he continued his good performances and was on the fringes of an international call in the Australia series.
However, he failed the yoyo test and had to wait a little longer for the big moment. He cleared the test recently and was named in the India’s T20I side. An injury to Kedar Jadhav ahead of the ODI series fetched him the ODI call up too, as a replacement for Jadhav.
Here is how the Twitterati welcomed Washington Sundar:

Another debutant today…Washington Sundar has been given the India cap. I’m assuming he’s playing in place of Kuldeep. #IndvSL

Washington Sundar (18y 69d) is now the youngest Indian International debutant since Piyush Chawla (17y 75d in 2006) and the youngest ODI debutant since Parthiv Patel (17y 301d in 2003). #INDvSL

Washington Sundar is the first Indian since @virendersehwag to make his ODI debut in Mohali. Sehwag debuted there v Pak in 1999.
MSK Prasad & GK Khoda are the other Indians to debut in Mohali, both v Ban in 1998.

No Rahane still… but debuts for Shreyas Iyer and Washington Sundar in consecutive matches. Are they going to play in South Africa? Unbelievable this from the Indian team management. #IndvSL

Not sure Washington Sundar is ready for intl cricket as yet. Very early days for him. But he has got good breaks this year. Had a good IPL as a bowler, a terrific TNPL, and a middling Ranji season. Now to make the most out of the chance.

I was once wondering whether this player was American or not, then I found out the information gathered.

Welcome Washington Sundar on this exciting #IndvSL 2nd ODI.— ✨ Karen D’souza ✨ (@karenvdsouza) December 13, 2017
The second highest scorer in the previous match #kulpdeepYadav ousted from the game without even having him bowled. And we surely do not have better batsman than #DineshKarthik. #RohisSharma faulters again. #INDvSL . Good luck #WashingtonSundar #debutant

I can't understand why team management is leaving Axar Patel from the squad,
He is Ranked No.8 in ICC bowling ratings.
How can they give a chance to Washington Sundar in place of him.#indvssl #lankans #mathews #lakmal #rohitsharma #shikhardhawan #cricbuzz #espncric #Mohali— harshdeep singh (@harshdeeep1995) December 13, 2017
Washington Sundar could be well be the genuine all-rounder India been looking for…Just the start of what could be an illustrious career… #INDvSL

Pleased with Washington Sundar getting a game. India badly need a batting all-rounder to complement Pandya. That would add depth and balance in a big way #INDvSL
