After the convincing performance against the Pakistanis, India took on a demoralised Sri Lankan side at Kennington Oval, London, keeping an eye on the semi-final berth of the ICC Champions Trophy. Indians were on a high after their win against the arch-rivals, while Sri Lankans had to win today to keep themselves alive in the tournament.
As it turned out, the Indian batsmen toppled many records while posting a total of 321 after being put into bat by Matthews. Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma repeated their heroics from Edgbaston as they yet another partnership of 130 odd runs before finally Rohit Sharma was caught at fine-leg while trying to hook one from Malinga. He made a vital contribution of 78.
Virat Kohli scored his first duck in a major ICC event. Yuvraj Singh shortly followed his captain shortly and the onus was then on Shikhar Dhawan and Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Shikhar Dhawan brought up his 10th century, becoming the fastest ever to reach the 10-century landmark, as plundered all the Sri Lankan bowlers for his 125 runs in 128 balls. He smashed an astounding 15 fours and a six in his innings. Dhawan brought up his 3rd century in the Champions Trophy with this knock of his as his love-affair with the Champions Trophy,
MS Dhoni provided the finishing touch to the innings as he scored a 52-ball 63 at a strike rate of 121, hitting two massive sixes and seven fours. With the two maximums, he tops the list of hitting the highest number of sixes outside home for India. Kedar Jadhav too played an important cameo to take the Indian side over the 320 mark. Lasith Malinga was the most impressive with the ball for the Sri Lankans as he picked up a couple of crucial wickets by giving away 70 runs in the ten overs he bowled.
