India are playing the first of the three-match ODI series against West Indies at the MA Chidambaram stadium in Chennai on Sunday. This is the team’s first 50-over affair at home since the World Cup and no wonder, the team is looking to give more chances to fringe players ahead of the T20 World Cup. In a bid to groom a backup all-rounder to Hardik Pandya, the Men in Blue handed the ODI debut to Shivam Dube.
The southpaw has come into the mix since the Bangladesh T20Is with the regular pace-bowling all-rounder Hardik Pandya injured. Dube scoring big with the bat in the domestic tournaments has also helped his cause. Rather, he has done well so far in the limited opportunities.
In fact, in the third T20I against Bangladesh, Rohit Sharma banked on him to bowl four overs and Shivam Dube did an excellent job picking three wickets. He was also promoted to number three in the second T20I against the West Indies and Dube slammed his maiden half-century.
Can Shivam Dube replicate similar performances in ODIs?
The team management has continued to bank on Shivam Dube in the ODIs too and are giving him as much exposure as they can in the build-up to the World Cup next year. He is slated to bat at number seven in the series opener at the Chepauk and with the Men in Blue playing only four specialist bowlers, Dube will have to deliver with the ball as well. It will be interesting to see how he pulls up on his ODI debut.
Meanwhile, as far as the match is concerned, the visitors have won the toss and opted to field. However, Virat Kohli cleared at the toss that they were anyways going to bat first. India will also miss their premier players Shikhar Dhawan and Bhuvneshwar Kumar in this series who have been sidelined with injuries. This is a great opportunity for KL Rahul to prove his mettle with the bat.
Having said that, Shivam Dube will be in the spotlight and the young man will be under pressure to deliver the goods in his first ODI game.

Why Jadhav is in the team 😴 to complete dube's quota?

@cricbuzz Isn't it surprising to see Shivam Dube playing instead of Chahal on a spin friendly wicket?

It will be gamble that India playing with shivam dube & Kedar Jadav both all-rounder in a match, at night dew factor will be the key, for India how to bowl at night and their is no chahal, but it will be a great match tonight, Shai hope…. #INDvWI #Chennai

@imVkohli and @BCCI need to realise no matter the format bowling strength is important. Having Kedar and Dube as your 5th and 6th bowlers is very risky. 8 batsmen in ODIs is just being too conservative. #INDvsWI

Would be interesting to see how India plan to utilise Dube & Pandya in the white ball sides.

I think this is good move because India's next target is #t20wc so Shivam DUBE is good choice and if he will play more matches then he gain more confidence.
