Two England fans taunt Bharat Army in the Hollies stand at Edgbaston
This behaviour from the fans was totally uncalled for.
Team India always enjoy a tremendous support when they tour England. There is also a community called Bharat Army who are termed as the official supporters of the Indian team on away tours. The players also love it as their backing encourages the team to do well. However, during the closely-fought Edgbaston Test, a couple of England fans taunted them with their turbans which has clearly not gone down well with the Bharat Army.
The first Test of the five-match series was won England by just 31 runs and no wonder there was a lot of banter going on between the fans of both the countries. But probably during the third day’s play in Birmingham, one of the England fans sitting at Hollies stand asked the Bharat Army for their passport and soon his friend taunted them by asking them about their turbans. This was a sort of an attack on them which surely was not liked by the visiting fans.
Meanwhile, as soon as the security officer pulled up, both of them took a U-turn with an old routine apology statement, “If anyone is offended then I’m sorry.”
Adam Collins, the Australian correspondent for Wisden, shed light on the incident with his post on the social media which read, “In the Hollies Stand, saw a dickhead taunting Bharat Army members who allege he said “show us your passports” after his mate went with “show us your turbans.” When pulled up by security, did the old ‘if anyone is offended then I’m sorry’ routine to avoid getting punted. #ENGvIND.”
Bharat Army responds
The Bharat Army definitely were offended with the comments of the England fans as they termed it as an unnecessary behaviour. They also went on to mention that they enjoy the banter with the cricket lovers during the Test match but such kind of behaviour is not at all acceptable.
“Honestly didn’t expect to experience this kind of behaviour in the Eric Hollis Stand. Always had great banter with England fans but this was just shocking and unprovoked behaviour. @ECB_cricket @edgbaston,” they tweeted.
