The Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) on Monday announced that two gates at the Feroz Shah Kotla stadium in Delhi will be named after former Indian women’s cricket captain, Anjum Chopra. It was only last month that DDCA had named the Gate No. 2 after former Indian opening batsman Virender Sehwag.

She has represented India in six World Cups in a career that lasted for almost 17 years. She made her debut in February 1995 against New Zealand and played her last T20I against Australia in 2012. She is now a renowned analyst and a commentator. It was about time that someone from the women’s cricket got the same honour as many other male cricketers. It surely sends out a positive message about the same.

DDCA in a press release said that Gate No. 3 and 4 of Feroz Shah Kotla stadium will be named after Chopra. The release read, “In order to recognize, encourage and reward the contribution that women deserve in our country and in her sports, a woman cricketer has been chosen too and it has been decided to name a gate in the name of Arjuna award winner and Padmashri awardee, Anjum Chopra. Gates 3-4 will be now be renamed as Anjum Chopra Gate.”

Two stands to be named after Bishan Singh Bedi and Mohinder Amarnath

In addition to the gates being named after Chopra, the DDCA is also planning to name two stands in the stadium after former India spinner Bishan Singh and Bedi and fast bowler Mohinder Amarnath. The first Annual Conclave of DDCA will also be held On November 29, informed DDCA president Vikramjit Sen. Bedi will be the keynote speaker at the event.

The DDCA has also constituted an Honours Committee led by retired Justice Mukul Mudgal as the chairman and comprising noted commentators Narottam Puri and Ravi Chaturvedi, senior journalists Neeru Bhatia and Vijay Lokapally.
