U19 World Cup 2018, Day 14- Round up
The Proteas conclude their world cup campaign with an impressive win.
South Africa and New Zealand clashed in a 5th place play-off game in the ICC U19 World Cup 2018 at the Hagley Oval in Christchurch. Both teams crashed out of the tournament following their defeats against Pakistan and Afghanistan respectively. Both teams took the field in order to make amends and win the game. However, it was South Africa who emerged victorious by 73 runs.
South Africa lost Jiveshan Pillay early, however, twin centuries from Matthew Breetzke and skipper Raynard van Tonder ensured that the Proteas notched a respectable score of 280 runs in 50 overs. The Kiwis stumbled during their run-chase and stumbled to the hefty defeat. Barring Dale Phillips’ 74 runs off 82 balls, the Black Caps batsmen found it tough against the South African bowlers.
Victories for Kenya and Ireland
Kenya and Papua New Guinea clashed in a 15th place play-off game at Lincoln. However, it was Kenya who won brushed aside PNG by 14 runs. Kenya stumbled during the entire phase of their innings and scored a modest total of 176 runs. However, they stormed back and bowled PNG out for 162 runs.
The match went right down to the wire as both teams fought tooth and nail to dominate each other. Nou Rarua played a gutsy hand for PNG but couldn’t guide them past the finishing line. Jayant Mepani starred for Kenya, first with a knock of 44 runs and then returning with a stupendous spell of 22 runs and three wickets in his quota of 10 overs.
In the other 13th place play-off game, Ireland comprehensively thumped Namibia by a margin of 102 runs. Ireland scored 228 runs for the loss of six wickets, riding on skipper Harry Tector’s stupendous century followed by contributions from the lower middle-order.
Canada hardly posed any threat and struggled throughout their innings. Barring Lohan Louwrens’ 62 runs and Gerhard Lottering’s 46 runs, the rest of their batting lineup faltered and consequently, Canada slumped to a defeat.
