U19 World Cup is the ICC tournament that has been organized every two years for the national U19 teams. A total of sixteen countries fought for the prestigious title in 2022, with India emerging as the winner after defeating England in the final clash.
The tournament was first introduced in 1988 as the Youth World Cup with just eight national teams and the tournament wasn’t held for the next ten years. However, in 1998, the tournament was reintroduced with more teams and South Africa hosted the tournament.
The format has remained the same with the sixteen teams divided into four groups and every team will get to play three matches in the league stages with the members of their group. The top two teams of each group will qualify for the quarterfinals, and thereby the winners enter the semi-finals and it continues into the finals. Australia hosted the first-ever youth tournament in 1988 and they managed to win it by beating Pakistan.
India has won the most number of U19 World Cup titles so far, with five to their name while Australia has won it thrice, Pakistan twice and Bangladesh, England, South Africa, and the West Indies once each. Sri Lanka and New Zealand have been runners-up once, but are yet to get their hands on the trophy.
A lot of players have gone on to make a big name from the U-19 circuit and there are no better examples than Virat Kohli, Kane Williamson, Steve Smith, Joe Root, Babar Azam who have all been priceless assets in the modern era for their countries.
The 2022 U19 World Cup is the latest edition hosted by West Indies and Bangladesh started the tournament as the defending champions. The youngsters have been showing really good signs ahead of the future and the impressive ones have been noted as well. The Indian U19 side has looked the strongest over the years with the amount of game development in the country and an IPL contract is at grabs for the youngsters as well.
