International League T20 (ILT20) starting next year in the UAE is set to be the second most lucrative tournament after the Indian Premier League (IPL). Being conducted by the Emirates Cricket Board (ECB), a team will have an overall salary cap of USD 2.5 million per team.
ILT20 is expected to be the second most expensive league as compared to any other franchise-based tournament being played around the world. For instance, while the highest-paid player in the IPL gets more than USD 2 million per season the ILT20 is set to pay USD 450,000 to its highest-paid cricketers per season.
In comparison, the highest-paid cricketer in Pakistan Super League (PSL) can earn up to USD 200,000. Similarly, the best-paid player in the Hundred gets USD 164,000, while the most expensive foreign player in the Big Bash League gets USD 238,000 per season.
David Warner is likely to skip BBL to participate in ILT20 in UAE
With so much cash involved, the players are likely to get attracted to the ILT20 as compared to any other franchise-based league. According to several reports, Australia’s destructive batter David Warner might skip the BBL to participate in the ILT20 in the UAE.
As per the organizers, the league will have a total of six teams with each team playing the other five teams twice during the group stage matches before reaching the knockout stages. The tournament will be conducted from January 6 to February 12, with 34 matches to be played. A total of nine players in a team can be overseas players while one UAE and one Associate player are must to complete the playing XI.
To note, three of the six franchises in the upcoming tournament have been purchased by IPL owners including Mumbai Indians (MI), Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), and Delhi Capitals (DC). The rest of the three teams are owned by Lancer Capital, led by Avram Glazer, part of the ownership of prominent football club Manchester United, top India business firm Adani Group, and Capri Global.
