Senior India pacer Umesh Yadav started his county stint on a memorable note by sending Worcestershire batter Taylor Cornall’s stump for a walk in the ongoing County Championship Division Two match in Northwood. Yadav has been signed by Middlesex for the remainder of the season.

The pacer succeeded in creating a good first impression right away by castling Cornall for 11 off a delivery that left the batter clueless. Umesh bowled a pitched-up delivery as Cornall attempted to defend it. However, the ball effortlessly breached his defence and went on to disturb the furniture. Yadav did not show any over-excitement in picking up his first wicket of the County season and carried out a quiet celebration.

Yadav has been roped in as Pakistan pace spearhead Shaheen Afridi‘s replacement as the tall speedster had to return home midway to prepare for the Sri Lanka series that gets underway on July 16. Yadav, who has only been featuring as India’s permanent Test specialist for the past few years, has been in and out of the Indian team and he would be hoping to make the most of this county stint.

With India not playing any Test match until the conclusion of the ICC T20 World Cup in Australia later this year, the Vidarbha cricketer would be eager to make the most of his opportunities to make a mark in the Indian Test team setup. As of now, there is already cut-throat competition in India’s pace department in red-ball cricket with the likes of Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, Shardul Thakur, etc. having churned out impressive performances in the last 12 months.

Coming back to the contest, Middlesex were all out for 188 in their first innings, and Worcestershire in reply are placed at 100/5 and continue to trail by 88 runs at the end of the day’s play. Yadav finished the day with figures of 1/25 from his nine overs.
