Umesh Yadav has been one of India’s most reliable bowlers in international cricket, especially in Test cricket. However, the emergence of pacers like Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah, who have been exceptional for India, has ensured that he remains sidelined in the ODI and T20I format. Since August 2017, Umesh has played one of one of India’s 22 ODIs.
Also, the Vidarbha pacer has only played one T20 International way back in 2012. However, recently, he dished out three wickets in one over for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) against the Kings XI Punjab (KXIP), which turned the contest on its head. The stupendous exhibition of bowling immediately grabbed the limelight and he was showered with accolades from the cricketing fraternity.
“I have age on my side”- Umesh Yadav
The cricketer has recently expressed his desire to represent the national team in all three formats of the game “Old or new, the red ball swings more in general. But it’s not that I don’t like the white ball. As a fast bowler, I want to play for India in all three formats. I like that. I have age on my side. I have that ability in me.” Umesh was quoted as saying by the Indian Premier League (IPL) website.
The right-arm pacer also spoke about the requirements that are required for one to succeed irrespective of the format. “The tag has been put that I bowl well in Tests because in Tests you have time; if the ball is swinging and reverse-swinging and you have that talent, [you can do well]. Red or white, if I bowl the same way in all three formats, I’ll have [success],” he added.
Umesh Yadav played a vital role during India’s successful campaign in the 2015 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. He was one of the primary reasons why India progressed to the semi-final of the tournament. Thereafter, gradually, he went out of contention for a berth in coloured-clothing cricket and became one of India’s main weapons in the longest format of the game.
