Former national chairman of selectors and veteran batter Dilip Vengsarkar has opined that the express pacer Umran Malik should be given chances at the international circuit. To note, the right-arm pacer has been selected for the Indian squad which will take on Ireland in a two-match T20I series.

The speedster from Jammu and Kashmir was named in the Indian squad to take on South Africa in a five-match T20I series. However, he did not get a chance to make his debut against the Proteas. With the first T20I match against Ireland slated to be played on June 26 (Sunday), Umran will be keen to get a chance in playing XI and show his true skills at the highest level.

He will do well if given an opportunity: Vengsarkar on Umran Malik

The right-arm pacer grabbed the limelight after doing extremely well in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022. Playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), Umran bowled several match-winning spells and breached the 150km/h mark consistently in the edition.

“I hope so because he (Umran) is a very exciting talent. He did well in the IPL and he deserves a chance as he looked the best bowler in the format. I hope he is on the plane and I am sure he will do well if given an opportunity,” Vengsarkar was quoted by India Today.

“He is young and raring to go. You must give an opportunity to someone who is in form. He is young, keen to play and hungry for success,” added the former national chairman of selectors.

Talking about Ireland vs India series, the first match will be played at The Village, Malahide, Dublin on June 26 (Sunday). To note, star all-rounder Hardik Pandya, who had an excellent captaincy stint during IPL 2022, has been named as the skipper of the Indian side with experienced pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar handling the vice-captain’s post. Meanwhile, home-side Ireland will be led by Andrew Balbirnie.
