Yuvraj Singh has termed the feeling of winning the World T20 in 2007 as unbelievable recalling the moment of Misbah-ul-Haq’s shot. India had a forgettable 50-over World Cup just before the inaugural 20-over event when they were ousted from the tournament in the first round itself. Also, nobody had given Men in Blue the chance going into the tournament after the debacle before. But the six sixes from Yuvraj Singh lit up the hopes and fans started following them.
India went into the tournament with the experience of playing a solitary T20 International against South Africa and as the senior players had backed off from the event, all youngsters were led by MS Dhoni. After qualifying for super sixes, they lost to New Zealand and then every other game was a do or die for the Men in Blue. They reigned supreme over all the confident and experienced teams like England, South Africa, Australia and Pakistan to be crowned the first ever T20 champions and that helped the fans believe in them once again.
Thanks to Misbah, we made history
Yuvraj was extremely pleased to recall the last over of the final bowled by Joginder Singh to the Pakistani skipper Misbah. He termed the shot as unbelievable and also feared that Sreesanth would drop the catch.
“Oh, that was unbelievable. Misbah hitting that shot when he could slammed the ball anywhere in front. Sreesanth taking that catch was incredible too. When I saw him getting under the ball I just closed my eyes because Sree was known to drop catches. But then Sree is such an unpredictable guy. He held the catch and with that the cup,” he said.
He also revealed that Harbhajan Singh was to bowl that over but the veteran denied to bowl saying that he was not confident of getting his yorkers right.
“But Bhajji said he was not confident of getting his yorkers. He told MS (Dhoni) not to take a chance with him. So MSD tossed the ball to Jogi. Thanks to Misbah, we made history,” Yuvi continued. The left-hander also credited the victory to their bowlers who were superb throughout for them.
“Bowlers won us the tournament. We enjoyed each other’s company and the camaraderie grew with every match. Everyone just expressed himself loudly on the field. Most importantly there was no coach (like Greg Chappell) to shackle our natural flair,” he concluded as all the scenes of the triumph were unfurling in front of his eyes.
