Aaron Finch announced that he has been employed at English County side, Surrey. Finch took the Twitter to let the world know that he got a new job. Amid uncertainty regarding Australian cricketers’ future, this is a respite for the Australia limited-overs opener.
Finch will play in the final of the Royal London ODI tournament. He thus joined the league of legend Kumar Sangakkara, Jason Roy, and Kevin Pietersen. Amid the pay dispute between Cricket Australia and Australia’s Players’ Association (ACA), this is big news for Finch. With the deadline June 30 over, almost 230 Australian players will face the hit of unemployment.
Australian players have long maintained that they will look for another job other than getting agreed with CA’s pay offer. CA has offered 22.5 per cent of its annual income to the players but players want the maximum share from CA, as a result, neither party managed to resolve the issue.
The pay dispute, which CA has revised at the last minute but was rejected by ACA, put Australia cricket at risk. Australia’s forthcoming bilateral series against Bangladesh, the lucrative ODI in India and next year’s Ashes are facing risk. These series are economically profitable and broadcasters eye for this series, so after key players’ absence from the team the broadcasters will not like to continue the expensive deal with CA.
Finch, 30, who made his debut in 2011, has played 82 ODIs and 31 T20I matches for Australia, is unlikely to break the unity with his teammates like David Warner and Steve Smith who publically spoke up against CA’s deal.
Australian players believed the board is killing cricket in Australia by denying them the maximum share of its annual income. Players also said CA’s majority of income comes from Australia’s performance and players’ value so without the cricket team, they are nothing.
Now, in the face of the crisis, CA’s message to players is that if any player tries to play first-class cricket elsewhere they will be banned and it is not making any sense to the players.
