Indian off-spinner R Ashwin wants the bowlers to make use of the new ICC rule related to running out of non-strikers and not be sceptical about it. Interestingly, Ashwin was criticised for going against the spirit of cricket in IPL 2019 when he dismissed non-striker Jos Buttler for backing up and it changed the course of the game completely. While many did not like the move from Ashwin, it was completely within the rules of the game.

However, the MCC has made some new amendments to the laws of cricket, which will be effective from October 2022. Running out the non-striker for backing up, which was deemed as unfair play earlier, has now been included in fair modes of dismissal and will be considered as a run-out.

The one feet the batsman take can end or change your careers: R Ashwin

Ashwin explained that despite the changes in the laws, some bowlers might feel hard on batters to dismiss them at the non-striker’s end, but reckoned it should not be the way to go. He added that their careers could be on the line if they fail to make sure that the batters do not move out early and suggested the bowlers should use the change of law in a better thought way.

“Law destigmatises the bowlers. Essentially, they are saying run the batsman out. Many bowlers feel ‘oh our batsmen themselves might feel upset (if they run out non strikers). They also feel what the world will say about them. That fear itself makes them not do it. I want to tell the bowlers again,” R Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.

“The one feet the batsman take (by moving out early), can end or change your careers. The batsman on strike might hit a six. If you take the wicket (by running out) your career might go up, else with the six (and runs) you might go out of team next match. That’s the kind of impact. I urge the bowlers not to think and should use this in their favour is my thought process,” he added.

Ashwin was recently picked up by the Rajasthan Royals in the IPL 2022 mega auction and he will be playing with Butter.
