Even as Australian left-handed Usman Khawaja is trying his heart out to perform as per expectations of the team and the national selectors in the four-match Test series against India, his family members don’t seem to have the best of days by any stretch of the imagination. His brother Arsalan who has been going through tumultuous times was re-arrested by the police on Thursday.

The charges laid on him were attempting to influence a witness in a case where he allegedly framed a love rival with a fake terror plot, the police remarked on Friday. Arsalan was earlier arrested on charges of forgery and attempting to pervert justice, but was released on bail in December after appearing in a court in Sydney as per media reports.

In-depth developments on the case

The 39-year-old was accused of breaching his bail conditions. A Sydney magistrate formally revoked his bail and he is expected to remain in custody until February when the next court hearing takes place. Back in August, Mohamed Nizamuddin was arrested after his notebook was found with ‘hit list’ written on it. The notes outlined plans to kill the then Honourable Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull.

The investigators in the case, said they suspect Arsalan for setting up Nizamuddin, his university colleague, as they had a dispute with regards to a woman. “documents allegedly found on University of NSW grounds in August this year containing plans that purported to facilitate terrorism attacks,” NSW Police had confirmed after the initial arrest.

Usman Khawaja’s response

Usman who is playing the Test series against India had asked people to respect their privacy and did not comment on the matter since the police was dealing with the matter.

“I won’t say much. It’s a matter for the police to deal with it,” the 31-year-old had told reporters. “Out of respect for the process, it would be inappropriate for me to make any further comment. I just ask for you to please respect my privacy and my family’s privacy at this time.”
