Veteran Eden Gardens groundsman Maheshwar Shaw contributes Rs 2000 from his salary to the Coronavirus relief fund

Coronavirus pandemic has brought the cricketing world to standstill. Literally no cricket is being played at the moment as the world is fighting against the deadly virus. India is no exception to it even as the relief funds are set up urging people to donate for various noble causes as the problems have just compounded during these tough times.

The celebrities and the cricketers, expectedly, have come forward to donate a hefty amount to the PM CARES and the CM Relief funds of respective funds. However, a heartwarming gesture from the veteran groundsman of the Eden Gardens Maheshwar Shaw has won the hearts of everyone.

According to a report in the Times of India, Shaw has donated Rs 2000 from his salary to the West Bengal State Emergency Relief Fund for the fight against the Coronavirus. So far, 19 positive cases have been identified in the state while one of them has lost his/her life and the others are still recovering.

Other donations from the CAB

Even the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) has raised its helping hand. Various affiliated units of the association has requested the CAB to donate money on their behalf and adjust it with their salaries later. The assistant curators of the CAB Safi Ahmed, Suranjan Mukherjee, Ranjit Shaw, Birendra Pratap Singh and Pradip Nayek have also donated money to the fight against the COVID-19.

Meanwhile, the former manager of Senior Bengal cricket team and current School Committee Chairman Amalendu Biswas has pledged to donate Rs 10,000 while the former Bengal cricketer IB Roy personally donated a sum of Rs 15,000 to the West Bengal Emergency Relief Fund.

On Monday, India Women’s cricketer, Richa Ghosh who played in the T20 World Cup final recently in Australia, also donated Rs 1 lakh to the Bengal CM’s Relief Fund. Her father handed over the cheque of the same to Siliguri District Magistrate Sumanta Sahay.

Among Indian cricketers, Poonam Yadav, Virat Kohli, Sourav Ganguly, Suresh Raina, Sachin Tendulkar among others have also come forward to donate to the relief funds. Even the BCCI donated a whopping amount of Rs 51 crore to the PM CARES fund on Saturday.
