Vidarbha won the erstwhile edition of the Ranji Trophy for the maiden time, beating Delhi in the final. The team, captained by Faiz Fazal, soared above expectations and maintained their domination throughout the event. Their skipper was also in top-notch form and turned out to be the second highest run-scorer of the series with 912 runs from nine matches.
He scored the runs at an average of 70.15 with five centuries and a half-century to his credit. The Maharashtra-born cricketer recently played in the recently concluded Vijay Hazare Trophy and notched 211 runs in five matches at an average of 42.20. In 102 first-class and 87 List A matches, the left-handed batsman has racked up 7058 and 2693 runs respectively.
Fazal determined to perform well
Despite his impressive run of form, the 33-year-old cricketer somehow hasn’t been able to stake his claim back into the national team. India are scheduled to play four Test against Australia, starting December 6 at Adelaide Oval, and the squad for the series was announced yesterday. However, Fazal’s name went missing in the list of selected players.
Back in June 2016, Faiz Fazal had the privilege of donning the national colours in India’s ODI against Zimbabwe in Harare and he didn’t disappoint by any means with a score of 55 not out. After being overlooked once again, Fazal must be disappointed, but he doesn’t want the same to unnerve him. Rather, he has pledged to work harder.
The upcoming edition of the Ranji Trophy gets underway on November 1 and Fazal wants to perform well in the domestic arena. Vidarbha will play their opening match against Maharashtra in the Elite Group A.
They are the defending champions and a lot would be expected of them. In the meantime, the veteran took to Twitter and wrote, “My life is defined as Work Hard -Play Ranji trophy – PERFORM- Repeat…..”
