Before the start of Ranji Trophy 2017-18, nobody gave Vidarbha a chance to lift their maiden title. Hopes of winning the league were pinned on teams like Mumbai and Gujarat. However, they soared above expectations and roared to the title triumph. They were clinical during the entire length of the tournament and pinned down the best of opponents.
The champions will now be rewarded by the Vidarbha Cricket Association (VCA) with a prize money of Rs 5 crores to be distributed among the players and the coaching staffs. Anand Jaiswal, VCA president, made the announcement after the conclusion of the game.
“The players will be felicitated by the state association. The Vidarbha Cricket Association will be distributing Rs 3 crore among its players. Also, the winner’s prize money of Rs 2 crore will also be distributed among the players,” he said.
Acting President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) CK Khanna also congratulated the team on their stupendous achievement. “It has been a tremendous performance by the Vidarbha team. I congratulate them on their stupendous show,” Khanna jested.
Rahul Johri, the Chief Executive of the BCCI took to Twitter and heaped praises on the bunch of vibrant Vidarbha cricketers.
Heartiest congratulations to Vidarbha on winning their first #RanjiTrophyFinal. Thank you MPCA for being such gracious hosts @BCCI

The Final Journey
Vidarbha started off handsomely by bowling out Delhi for 295 runs. Rajneesh Gurbani, right-arm pacer, ripped through Delhi’s lineup with a scintillating hat-trick and a six-wicket haul. They racked up a massive score of 547 in the first innings on the backs of Akshay Wadkar’s ton and some useful contributions from the lower-order. Delhi tried hard in the second innings courtesy Nitish Rana and Dhruv Shorey.
However, the likes of Gurbani and Wakhare and Aditya Sarwate’s spell restricted them to 280 runs in the second innings. While chasing 29 runs, they lost Faiz Fazal, their skipper, cheaply. Nevertheless, four glorious boundaries from veteran Wasim Jaffer guided Vidarbha to their first Ranji title in 61 years.
