Earlier on June 6, he had come to attend Indian captain Virat Kohli’s charity dinner. According to some news reports his presence made Virat and other members of team India uncomfortable. Mallya was also present India’s first match of the Champions Trophy against their arch-rivals Pakistan.
Wasn’t invited for the dinner
Mallya used to own IPL team Royal Challengers Bangalore, which incidentally was captained by current Indian captain Virat Kohli. But Kohli had not invited his former boss to the event. According to DNA, a top BCCI official present at the function said that Kohli and Indian team felt ‘uncomfortable’ by the presence of the tycoon.
“Look, Virat or his foundation never invited Mallya at the function. But normally what happens at the charity dinner is that someone who has bought a table is entitled to invite his guests. Similarly, someone who bought a table must have invited him,” a top BCCI source present at the function told PTI today.
It is also believed that due to some unavoidable situation, Mallya couldn’t be asked to leave. The source further added that presence of Mallya was one of the reasons behind Indian team deciding to leave the function early.
