Over the past few years, there have been very few bowlers, who have been able to get the measure of Virat Kohli, the current all-format Indian captain. He treads a calm and composed route, especially when he’s plying his trade with the bat in hand. He is only 30 years old and already on the brink of breaking Sachin Tendulkar’s record of most centuries in ODI cricket, which is 49.
Even the greats of the game have been awestruck by the masterclasses produced by the Delhi-born cricketer. Recently, the run-machine Kohli churned out a couple of tons against Australia in the five-match ODI series at home. Meanwhile, AB de Villiers, the former South African cricketer, said that Virat will carry on with stupendous performances even in the recent future.
I believe it’s his personality and mental strength
De Villiers, who has played with Virat for Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Indian Premier League, was all praises for his teammate. “Virat’s performances over the last while have been incredible and I can’t see it stopping very soon. I have played with him for eight years now in the IPL and you can never take the class out of the guy,” De Villiers was quoted as saying in Sport24.
“However, he is human after all and, like any other cricketer, he will go through patches from time to time where he has to go back to the basics and work his way through it again. I believe it’s his personality and mental strength that gets him through those moments and makes him the best ODI player in the world at the moment,” he added.
Virat is next scheduled to play in the 12th edition of the IPL, starting May 23 and his franchise will play the tournament opener against defending champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK), captained by MS Dhoni, at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. Thereafter, Kohli has the massive task of captaining the national team in the 2019 World Cup in England and Wales.
