Virat Kohli and Yuvraj Singh lend support to AB de Villiers over unjustified criticism
De Villiers cleared the air around his comeback offer to South Africa squad.
Days after South Africa’s exit from the World Cup, their former captain AB de Villiers dropped a bombshell by stating that he never demanded to be in the squad for the mega event. During the course of the tournament, reports came out that de Villiers had met the team-management one day before the announcement of the final squad. De Villiers, who retired from international cricket last year, reportedly asked the team management whether he could be a part of the squad.
The team management had declined the proposal soon. Later, skipper Faf du Plessis had stated that de Villiers did call him to talk about the possibility of getting into the World Cup squad. However, the legendary batsman has now rubbished all those reports by saying that he was asked if he would like to be included in the South Africa World Cup squad. De Villiers claimed that it wasn’t him demanding to be part of the touring party.
“As a result, I was unfairly described as arrogant, selfish and indecisive but, with all humility, my conscience is clear. I retired for honest reasons and, when asked if I could be available for the World Cup, agreed to keep the door open. In the event, understandably, the team moved on. No problem. I am not angry with anybody,” wrote de Villiers on Twitter where he shed light on the entire episode.
South Africa had a terrible outing in the World Cup. The Proteas bowed out of the tournament at the group stage. After a disastrous start to the campaign, they managed to win only three of their nine games. Unlike the start, South Africa finished the tournament on a high by beating Australia to finish seventh in the table.
AB de Villiers gets support from Indian stars
In the wake of AB de Villiers’ revelation, India skipper Virat Kohli and former batsman Yuvraj Singh have thrown their support behind him. Kohli is still de Villiers’ teammate in the IPL while Yuvraj had also shared the Royal Challengers Bangalore dressing room in the past with the South African great. Both the players took to Instagram to lend their support to de Villiers.
