Virat Kohli best run chaser ever to have played the game: Michael Vaughan

Indian captain Virat Kohli continued his glorious run in the one-dayers as he smashed his 33rd ton during the run chase against South Africa in the first ODI of the 6-match series. Kohli made the run chase a cake walk after he was dropped his opposite number in the slips. Earlier, South African skipper Faf du Plessis opted to bat first after winning the toss. Test opener of the side Aiden Markram had replaced injured AB de Villiers in the side while India had played the wrist-spinners in the side in the form of Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav.

Spinners tighten the grip

Indian bowlers didn’t allow the South African openers to score freely. Amla got out LBW when the delivery didn’t rise as much as the right-hander expected. After a brief partnership between De Kock and skipper Du Plessis, the Indian spinners took over and started bowling in tandem. Both Chahal and Yadav gave just 79 runs in their 20 overs and sent 5 batters back to the dressing room.

Skipper Du Plessis saw the wicket tumbling from the other end but he along with all-rounder Chris Morris took assault to the Indian pace bowlers as they posted a decent total of 269 on the board for India to chase. India had never beaten them at the Durban.

The run chase saw the Indian skipper playing risk-free cricket along with his Test vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane who was drafted in the side replacing Manish Pandey. Rahane played a very handy inning of 79 runs while Kohli looked unstoppable as he completed his 33rd ODI hundred, 2nd most in the ODI history.

The Indian batsman never looked in trouble at all after the reprieve he got from is the counterpart in South Africa. He paced his innings perfectly and ran the runs hard between the wicket. Kohli was named the man of the match for his brilliant knock.

On social media, fans along with former cricketers were awe-struck by Kohli’s yet another ODI century, his 20th in a run chase out of which 18 have helped the side win the game. Former England skipper Michael Vaughan too couldn’t stop himself from declaring the Indian captain as the best ever run chaser in the history of the game through a tweet on Twitter.

The way Kohli has shattered the records in the run chases, no wonder Vaughn has made a logical and correct call. Indians would hope that their skipper continues glorious glorious form and keep winning the matches for the side.
