Things have finally started to get better for the Royal Challengers Bangalore as they registered their maiden victory of IPL 12. After facing defeat in the first six games, the franchise finally got off to a winning start after defeating the Kings XI Punjab on Saturday. Whilst playing in the second doubleheader of the day, the team locked horns with the Kings XI Punjab at the exemplary IS Bindra stadium in Mohali.
The visitors won the toss and elected to field first. The first innings witnessed a scintillating knock of 99 runs from Chris Gayle, however, economical spells by Moeen Ali and Navdeep Saini and handy contribution from Yuzvendra Chahal eventually helped RCB to restrict the hosts on the score of 174 runs.
Chasing 174 isn’t an easy task for any visiting team and what made the situation worse for the Bangalore-based franchise was the early dismissal of in-form Parthiv Patel. But then came AB de Villiers and built a magnificent partnership with the skipper Virat Kohli. The duo steadily took the team near the score. Kohli, after completing his 50, was albeit dismissed by Mohammed Shami. But with the help of a blistering knock from De Villiers and a useful cameo by Marcus Stoinis, the Royal Challengers Bangalore ultimately registered their first win of the tourney.
Kohli showers heaps of praises on ABD
AB de Villiers was adjudged the Man of the Match for his match-winning knock of 59 runs. Post the match, Virat Kohli showered heaps of praise on his South African counterpart. The RCB skipper, when asked about the 35-year old’s contributions, went all praises. He said as quoted by India.com, “Most pleasing thing is coming for an interview at this time, and not immediately out of the field. Great feeling to get across the line. Have been unlucky in a couple of games. Won’t say we’ve been unlucky in every game, but a couple of games we should’ve closed out before this. After so many setbacks, the guys had desired. That’s one word we spoke about,”
Kohli further talked about yesterday’s run-chase. He admired his teammates, who perfectly calculated the run chase, and opened up about his plans. The Delhi Cricketer said, “We thought 190 will be par and to restrict them to 170 was a great effort. To pick up four wickets in eight overs in the middle for 60 runs was an outstanding effort. We knew Chris was going to bat deep.
“So many opportunities to get dot balls. We knew if we bowled decently to him, we might restrict them.” the 30-year old added.
