He had set the 2015 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand on fire by slamming four consecutive centuries. Sri Lankan legend Kumar Sangakkara scored 541 runs in seven matches in the edition and could have easily topped the list if his team was not ousted in the quarter-finals against South Africa. Still, the former left-hand batsman made an unmatched history and thinks India captain Virat Kohli has it in him more than anybody else to break that incredible record in the World Cup.

Though he hasn’t hit a hundred so far in this World Cup, Kohli has made four consecutive fifties and is India’s second-best scorer with 316 runs in six games so far. He completed 11,000 ODI and 20,000 international runs during his knocks in this World Cup. One would have fancied him reaching the three-figure mark in a few of those games but he failed to convert the fifties into hundreds.

Kohli has scored 4 consecutive fifties this World Cup

“Quite a few of them but Virat Kohli stands head and shoulders above the rest,” the 41-year-old Sangakkara said in an interview, as reported by Bangladesh-based cricfrenzy.com.

The former Sri Lanka captain had produced this unique feat of four consecutive hundreds in the 2015 edition against Bangladesh (105 not out), England (117 not out), Australia (104) and Scotland (124). Before him, Mark Waugh, Mathew Hayden and Sourav Ganguly had scored three hundreds in a single World Cup but none of them did it in consecutive matches.

Though not in the World Cup, Kohli also has some great records of scoring three consecutive hundreds in ODIs (against Sri Lanka and West Indies) and three tons in one series (against South Africa last year). The man has 41 hundreds to his credit in ODIs which is the second most by any batsman after Sachin Tendulkar’s 49.

Kohli scored 82, 77, 67 and 72 in the four games against Australia, Pakistan, Afghanistan and the West Indies, respectively, in this World Cup. He picked up hundreds in his previous two World Cups in 2011 and 2015 against teams like Bangladesh and Pakistan but is yet to make one as the captain.
