Virat Kohli confirms talking to Daniel Vettori for India's coaching role
Indian Test skipper Virat Kohli has finally put an end to all the speculations and confirmed that he spoke with former New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori to take up the coaching role with Team India.
There were unconfirmed reports over the past few days that the India Test captain had asked Vettori about his views if he were to be offered the role. Kohli and Vettori work together as the skipper-head coach pair in the IPL franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore.
As reported by ‘The Times of India’, Kohli has admitted that he did speak to the New Zealander “a while back”.
“I don’t see it as a controversy at all,” the TÖI quoted Kohli as saying at the sidelines of a promotional event in Bengaluru.
But when asked if he has floated some other names as well, Kohli gave a tongue-in-cheek reply.
“You guys [media] seem to know more about it, so I will wait for your verdict on that.” With Ravi Shastri’s tenure ending after the ICC World Twenty20 last month and India’s tour of Zimbabwe next month, BCCI is in the hunt for a new coach unless Shastri’s contract is renewed.
There are as many as 10 names reportedly in the fray to take up the role. But, none of the names have been confirmed as the frontrunners for the job.
Besides Vettori, former team director Ravi Shastri himself may join the Indian team but this time as the chief coach. Another Kiwi legend Stephen Fleming and former Australian opener Justin Langer and Stuart Law’ are also being been seen as prospects.
