Indian skipper Virat Kohli doesn’t forget or let things go. You give him one and he will wrap that in a gift pack and return it back in multiples. England’s Joe Root hit a hundred in the last ODI of the three-match series against India and with the last boundary he got to his century and took his team over the line. Root then did the mic drop, dropping his bat having accomplished the task.

Over to the Test series, Root is now the captain of the team and they face India in the first Test at Edgbaston. He won the toss and elected to bat first on what looks like a good wicket to bat on. Ravichandran Ashwin gave India the early breakthrough in the first session with the wicket of Alastair Cook and the English skipper was out there in the middle with a mission to give his team solidity and take them to a big total.

Root took his time as usual and got his eye in. He then started to play his shots and the runs were coming pretty easy for the skipper. He got to his half century in the second session and had a couple of really good partnerships with Keaton Jennings and Jonny Bairstow. He was batting on 80 and there were discussions about his poor conversion rate and how he manages to get himself out every time after a fifty.

Just when the Bairstow-Root partnership looked threatening he was run out. Facing Ashwin the wicketkeeper hit one towards midwicket and it was the Indian skipper Kohli chasing the ball. The batsmen decided to take a couple, Kohli collected and released the ball in swift motion. It followed the perfect trajectory towards the stumps where the bowler was waiting to collect it. Root was struggling, he would fall short even if Ashwin would collect the ball and disturb the stumps.

That was not required as Kohli’s throw hit the stumps and Root was well short of his crease and he was dismissed after batting so well all through the day. He just got up and walked off. Kohli as soon the ball thrashed into the timber knew he got his man and was off celebrating.

He blew a couple of flying kisses – then mocked the mic drop and silenced the crowd – read his lips and you know what the pumped up Indian captain was trying to convey. Kohli said: “Mic drop… F**k off”
