Virat Kohli’s decision to step down as the captain of the Indian T20I side after the 2021 edition of the T20 World Cup this year has taken the cricketing world by storm. And, former Indian cricketing great Dilip Vengsarkar has reacted to this matter.
Vengsarkar stated that Kohli has been an outstanding cricketer as well as captain, and has helped India to win many matches as well. Adding that Kohli has not done very well in the T20 format of the game, the 65-year-old opined that Kohli has not been able to win even a single IPL title.
Vengsarkar also said that he thought that Kohli would announce his decision to step down as the Indian captain after the conclusion of the T20 World Cup this year, and added that Kohli deserves to lift the T20 World Cup as the Indian captain.
“I think he has been an outstanding cricketer and outstanding captain. He has done extremely well as captain and won many matches. But of course, in the T20 format, he has not done really well even in the IPL for his team. They have not been able to win the title even once. IPL would have played in his mind.
He would like to concentrate in the Test format, which is very important for India. I thought he would announce any decision after the World Cup. I hope he wins the World Cup because he deserves it. He has worked hard all these years for Indian cricket. I hope he goes out on a high note,” said Vengsarkar to India Today.
Virat Kohli is a world class batsman and a good captain: Dilip Vengsarkar
Dilip Vengsarkar also said that Kohli is a world-class batsman and a good captain, and has done well for India in both Tests as well as ODIs. Adding that it is indeed unfortunate that Kohli is stepping down as the captain, Vengsarkar said that there is no guaranteed winner in the T20I format of the game.
The former Indian cricketer concluded by stating that Kohli has worked hard for Indian cricket and is a player who wears his heart on his sleeves.
“Outstanding, I would say. He is a world-class batsman and is a good captain, has done extremely well in Tests and ODIs. I guess he would have wanted to concentrate more on Tests. It’s very unfortunate. You cannot guarantee winning in this format.
Way back in 2007, we did not guarantee that we would win the World Cup but we won the World Cup. In the Test format, he has been able to do very well. Any team can beat any side in this format. I hope he wins the World Cup because he has worked hard for Indian cricket. He is a world-class player and he wears his heart on his sleeves,” concluded Vengsarkar.
