Indian captain Virat Kohli has been in stupendous form since 2016, across all formats. The 30-year-old batsman recently led India to a 4-1 ODI series win in New Zealand and before that, a historic series win in Australia. Against the Kiwis, though, Kohli did not play the last two ODIs to give himself some much-deserved rest. After two back to back overseas series wins, the captain is receiving praises from all quarters.
Former Australia captain Ian Chappell too joined the bandwagon and lavished praise on Kohli in his recent column for Cricinfo. Chappell wrote that the Delhi-born cricketer wears his heart on a sleeve which makes him the most passionate and emotional cricketer on the field.
“Watching India gradually assert superiority over Australia it became clear that the tourists had bought into Kohli’s passionate pursuit of victory. Each moment of success was celebrated with vigour until finally, they were able to frolic around the Sydney Cricket Ground as a team, triumphantly holding aloft the Border-Gavaskar Trophy,” Chappell wrote in his column.
The team has adjusted to Kohli’s demeanour
He further explained the passion in Kohli, and how the team has adjusted to it. This emotional outbreak makes him and the team fight better. The Aussie great also thinks it is the captain’s vision for success that the team married with and it proved determinantal in obtaining favourable outcome.
“Kohli is as emotional on the field as any captain I’ve seen. This can be detrimental as often a team’s performance tends to fluctuate with the captain’s emotions. However, in Kohli’s case, the team has adjusted to the emotional rollercoaster ride and they certainly didn’t lack any fighting spirit when the going became tough in Australia. This was a classic case of the captain having a clear vision for success and the team buying into the concept.” Chappell wrote.
Many experts have claimed that Kohli is more Aussie than Indian at least with his on-field behaviour and aggressive traits. His aggression and intensity on the field is of top level; he celebrates every wicket, run and win like it’s the biggest or the last.
