Virat Kohli is head and shoulders above his peers, says Kumar Sangakkara

Virat Kohli is known for his flamboyant batting style across formats in the modern day cricket which has won him plaudits from the best in the business. Recently, former batting legend Kumar Sangakkara, who has more than 18,000 international runs and seems to love watching Kohli play, joined the ranks of the Indian skipper’s fans.

The former Sri Lankan skipper reckons the 30-year-old Indian batsman is ‘destined for greatness’ and ranked him ahead of his contemporaries in today’s cricket across all formats. The Delhi-born is currently the top ranked batsman in both Tests and ODIs. He is also the fastest batsman to 10,000 ODI runs.

The right-handed batsman had a fabulous year 2018 with the bat scoring runs all around the world and in every format which took him way ahead of his contemporaries Kane Williamson, Joe Root, and Steve Smith in terms of greatness and consistency. Run-machine Kohli became the first player ever to win the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) cricketer, test and one-day international (ODI) player of the year awards in the same year.

“Everything about Virat’s game stands out. I think he is head and shoulders above anyone else in world cricket today. And I think going forward, he will be one of the greatest ever cricketers, if not the greatest ever,” Sangakkara was quoted as saying in an interview with a news channel at the launch of their food joint, ‘Ministry of Crabs’ in Mumbai.

The 41-year-old southpaw was amazed by Kohli’s ability to score runs in every format of the game. With 39 centuries from 222 ODIs, Indian captain in second only to former Indian legend Sachin Tendulkar (49 from 463 matches) in the century maker’s list in 50-overs cricket. He also has 25 centuries in 77 Tests which is phenomenal. Sangakkara believes that Kohli has a very solid technique and determination to perform well with the bat which keeps him going.

“He has this incredible knack of scoring runs and has a very, very solid method that he believes in…” said the former Sri Lanka captain.
