Virat Kohli is not a machine, he is a human being: Ravi Shastri
The Indian skipper has been playing non-stop cricket that has taken a toll on his body
In the modern day game, there are very few players who are able to excel in all three formats of the game. It is difficult to continue adapting to different forms of cricket from time to time without a dip in form. Players have to do a lot of work behind the scenes to come up with positive performances on match days. International cricket is demanding and players cannot be treated as robots as they need some time off to be mentally prepared for upcoming matches.
The Indian skipper has been playing a lot of cricket over the past few years. Though Virat Kohli is one of the fittest athletes in cricket, he cannot burden his body with too many games with very little rest. The run machine has had a few injury concerns in the past and needs to manage his workload to have a prolonged cricket career. Kohli suffered a neck injury in the IPL that has ruled him out of the County championship and he will undergo rehabilitation at the NCA.
Tough calls to be taken in future
Head coach Ravi Shastri believes that Kohli needs to take rest ahead of the all-important tour to England. “He is not a machine but a human being. It is not a case of putting rocket fuel up his backside and getting him on the park. Even a top dog can’t be given rocket fuel up his backside.” Shastri told Mirror. Though Kohli is a workaholic, he needs a break to prepare himself for overseas tours. Fans cannot expect him to keep performing without taking rest.
The injury to Virat Kohli will be a big loss to Surrey and it could also result in a revenue loss to the County. “It’s hugely disappointing that Virat won’t be joining Surrey for the month of June but we understand injuries happen and we have to respect the decision of the BCCI medical team to pull him from his stint with us,” Surrey Director of Cricket, Alec Stewart was quoted as saying by timesofindia.com. County cricket is very demanding and the Indian skipper cannot risk participating in it this time due to the condition of his body.
The BCCI medical team is confident that Virat will be available for India’s tour to Ireland and England. The skipper will undergo a fitness test on June 15 at the NCA. Too much of cricket has taken a toll on Kohli’s body and he needs to take tough calls in future to remain fresh for important matches for the national team.
