Yesterday (August 24) marked the 46th anniversary of India’s epic four-wicket win at The Oval. With that victory, the Indian team registered their first ever Test match and series win in England. In an interview, Ajit Wadekar, who captained that side got reminiscing about their memorable feat. A former coach/cricket manager of the national team, Wadekar now keeps himself busy as the head of the Cricket Association for the Physically Challenged. The former skipper also shared his views on the current Indian captain, Virat Kohli.
Kohli first took over captaincy reigns of the Test side against Australia in Adelaide towards the end of 2014 owing to an injury MS Dhoni incurred. That match would perfectly capture everything one needed to know about him as a skipper. His brash, aggressive tactics, along with his need to lead from the front led to one of the most exciting Tests matches in the rivalry.
“Virat has been impressive and has a bold, aggressive approach. He’s not bothered about the opposition and this attitude appears to have rubbed off on the rest of the players. Thanks to Virat’s approach, the players take to the field with more vigor,” Wadekar told The Telegraph in an exclusive interview.
Virat has been impeccable as a captain
After MS Dhoni’s surprise retirement from the helm later in the Australia series, the Delhi-lad took over the captaincy of the Indian Test side, aged 27. Since then, he has led the Indian team in 29 Test matches. In those 29 games, the Indian team boasts of a win percentage of 64.29 with 18 victories under the captaincy of the swashbuckling batsman.
The leader has to bear enormous pressure created from the infinite expectations of the massive base of Indian cricket fans. However, his impeccable statistics serve as a testament to his brilliance as a captain.
