Indian captain Virat Kohli extended his lead at the top of the ICC ODI batsmen rankings with his superlative batting effort in the 6-match ODI series against the South Africans. Kohli scored 558 runs in 6 innings at an average of 186. He held the top position in the ranking previously with 876 ratings and has gained 33 points for his stupendous show; his current rating is – 909. AB de Villiers who played just the last three matches and couldn’t make a lot of difference for his team though continues to hold the second spot has lost 28 points and has a current rating of 844.
Among other top gainers is Indian opener Shikhar Dhawan who scored 323 runs batting 6 times in the series, his average was 64. He previously was at #14 and on the back of his dominant batting effort managed a place in the top 10 with 769 points (previously – 726) to his name. His partner Rohit Sharma though was the third highest scorer in the series has lost points, from his previous 4th spot he is down to 6 and now has 799 points (previously – 816).
Indians rain supreme in the ODI rankings after their maiden series win as pacer Jasprit Bumrah now complements the skipper at the top spot in the bowlers’ rankings. He was at the third spot at the start of the series with 728 points and jumped to the number 1 position with 787 rating points. He is not alone at the peak as Afghanistan’s Rashid Khan joins him with as many points having gained 8 places in the ranking.
This is the first time Rashid and in fact, an Afghanistan bowler occupies the number one rank in the ICC ODI bowlers’ rankings. He was magnificent with his bowling effort against the clueless Zimbabweans. The leg-spinner scalped 16 wickets in 5 matches and had an unbelievable average of 7.93.
Rashid also made valuable contributions to the team with the bat and thus rose from No.15 to No.4 in the all-rounder’s rankings. His previous point tally was 234 and currently has 311 points besides his name. He was the star of the show for Afghanistan in the 4-1 series win.
The two Indian wrist spinners Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal wreck havoc on the South African batsmen. Right through the series, the course of the game changed India’s way once they were introduced in the attack. While Kuldeep claimed 17 wickets Chahal had 16 to his name and together they bagged 33 wickets in the series. Their brilliant performance has reflected on the rankings as well.
Chahal now is among the top 10 bowlers occupying the 8th spot; he has 667 points in his account. Kuldeep, on the other hand, is at No.15 with 628 points.
Another Afghanistan player who gained in this update is all-rounder Mohammad Nabi – he held his position but has gained 16 points to reduce the gap with Pakistan’s Mohammad Hafeez who is at the second place with 339 ratings. Nabi now has 332 points and is at No.3.
