The recently concluded test series between India and Australia has been one of the most controversial series in the recent past. The series was marked by some unhealthy incidents which defamed the spirit of the game badly. Looking at the controversies that took place during the series, expert cricket analyst Harsha Bhogle expressed his thoughts on twitter saying that the series would be remembered for all the negatives rather than the positives.
Indian skipper Virat Kohli certainly felt that the Australians did cross the line during the series as the Australian media went as far as to comparing the prolific batsman to controversial U.S president Donald Trump. Offended by the controversies that popped up during the Border-Gavaskar trophy the 28-year-old commented that he does not consider the Australians his friends anymore.
However, former West Indian batsman Viv Richards believes that there is nothing wrong with the competitive and the confrontational stuff that comes with a game of cricket between two highly rated cricketing sides.
In an interview with India today Richards quoted “This isn’t the first or will not be the last time. Was something said in a derogatory manner where someone’s color was brought into play? I am not quite sure why Virat would have made such a strong statement. Maybe he feels strongly in his mind. But if those borders are crossed, then certainly it’s no good. It’s totally idiotic. We have an obligation as sportsmen. Confrontation can be healthy but one should not cross the line. These are the things that will be in question.”
“There is nothing wrong with such stuff so long as you can reply. What I think looks useless if you talk and cannot walk. Then don’t get involved.”
When asked about the comparisons between Richard and Kohli, the legend said that Kohli is a very different type of player than him. But he also praised Kohli’s attitude and his will to perform for the team.
“He is a modern-day sort of player. But what I like is that he brings a certain attitude, that feeling that I know I am talented enough, I know I have the ability and he brings the will which I think is as important. Those two things I think are the most important to have in your corner that you know you are good enough and mentally you are good to fulfill that will. That’s all part of the competitive game”
