Virat Kohli has witnessed a slump in form since November 2019 with no centuries to his name in any format and with India scheduled to play two major tournaments later this year, his lean patch on the 22 yards has been worrisome for the selectors as well as the team management.
With Virat not a part of the Indian squad for next month’s ODI series against Zimbabwe, former Pakistan spinner Danish Kaneria reckons that he might even get dropped for Asia Cup 2022. At the same time, the veteran spinner has also went on to say that Kohli should have featured in the Zimbabwe ODIs ahead of youngster Ishan Kishan.
India shouldn’t have picked Ishan Kishan in the side: Danish Kaneria
“India shouldn’t have picked Ishan Kishan in the side as Sanju Samson would then have gotten to play all three ODIs without any extra pressure. Instead of Kishan, Kohli should have been in the squad,” Kaneria said while speaking on his YouTube channel.
“Virat Kohli should have played in this series. Does BCCI think that he should only feature in major tournaments? But if he fails there, then once again there would be talks about his lack of form. I think that is an injustice for Virat Kohli,” he added.
“You have to be very clear with how you want to handle him. While he was rested for the entire West Indies tour, he surely should have been there for the Zimbabwe series. He could have found his form in the 50-over games and then played the Asia Cup. But it seems now that he might be dropped for the Asia Cup as well,” Kaneria further said.
The batting megastar is currently on a break from the game as is not a part of the ongoing limited-overs series against the West Indies. He has also been given an extended break after not being picked for the away ODI series against Zimbabwe, starting August 18.
Virat Kohli had a forgettable tour of England where he scored 12 runs from two T20Is and registered scores of 16 and 17 in the two ODIs.
