Virat Kohli might quit RCB captaincy to focus on other formats: Rajkumar Sharma
Quitting RCB captaincy would help Kohli concentrate more on ODI and Test cricket for Team India, feels Sharma.
Virat Kohli took the cricket world by storm by making a massive announcement on Thursday evening (September 16). Through a long note on social media, the Indian skipper notified he will step down as T20I captain after the upcoming high-voltage T20 World Cup. Kohli cited workload the major reason behind his decision. The 32-year-old also said he wants to give himself space and enjoy the game.
With Kohli’s call becoming the talk of the town, several fans and experts have given their opinion behind the star cricketer’s step. Kohli’s childhood category Rajkumar Sharma also falls in that category. On being asked whether the inability of winning ICC tournament prompted Kohli’s decision, Rajkumar said this factor wouldn’t have played in the cricketer’s mind as he has done a phenomenal job as captain.
Virat Kohli’s record depicts what he has done for the country: Rajkumar Sharma
“As far as not winning an ICC tournament is concerned, I don’t think it a big tag as if you see his records, he is one of the most successful captains and I am talking about all three formats. So you can’t judge a captain just on the basis of how many ICC trophies he has won. His record depicts what he has done for the country both as a captain and player,” Rajkumar told India News Sports.
Interestingly, Rajkumar further said Kohli might quit Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) captaincy as well when the time comes. “As far as IPL is concerned, I think he might quit RCB captaincy at some time and continue playing for the franchise as a batsman. This will be better for him as well as he would be relieved and can concentrate more on ODI and Test cricket for Team India,” he asserted.
Notably, Kohli has led India to 27 wins in 45 T20Is as captain. With the T20 World Cup being Kohli’s last leadership assignment in the shortest international format, he would like to end his tenure on a high note. Meanwhile, Kohli is currently gearing up for the second leg of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 which gets underway on September 19. With both IPL and T20 World Cup taking place in UAE, the veteran cricketer would view the Indian tournament as an ideal preparation opportunity.
