Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal are dubbed as the spin-twins given their success for the team post the Champions Trophy 2017 debacle. The left-arm chinaman and right-arm leg-spinner have gone onto put the Indian team on the horizon and at the peak of the limited-overs rankings. Both the spinners rose up the ranks from IPL.
However, in the aftermath of the ICC World Cup 2019, both Kuldeep and Chahal have been missing in action. Both the spinners struggled to come to grips during the tournament and led to Kuldeep Yadav being benched and Chahal continuing as the sole spinner in the second half of the tournament, without much success.
With the Indian team focusing on the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2020 in Australia, captain Virat Kohli and team management mentioned that they were focusing on playing more all-rounders in order to increase the depth of team’s batting lineup. This means Kuldeep and Chahal have not played in the T20I series against West Indies and South Africa. But former captain Sourav Ganguly feels that Kohli must bring the duo back, in order for the Men in Blue to succeed.
‘I hope Yuzvendra Chahal has only been rested to give the opportunity to others’
The current President of the Cricket Association of Bengal, Ganguly felt that the team needed the wrist spinners, as they are the wicket-takers in the shortest format and Indian team didn’t need two left-arm spinners (Jadeja and Krunal Pandya) in the format, given that they went for runs in both the series, “Virat needs to bring back the wrist spinners into this format. I hope Yuzvendra Chahal has only been rested to give the opportunity to others or else he is a must for India in the T20 format. India doesn’t need two left-arm spinners,” Ganguly wrote in his column in TOI.
Ganguly also said that he is not concerned with Indian team’s results in T20 format going into the next year’s premier T20 event in Australia as the team’s performance on the big stage will matter the most and for that skipper, Virat Kohli needs to be prepared and stay calm for that period, “The T20 World Cup is in Australia next year and opinions and judgments will be passed. The key person amidst all this will be Virat Kohli, and it will be important for him to stay calm for a long period of time,” Ganguly further mentioned.
